Before you book a service call, a few quick checks solve a surprising number of "AC is not cooling" problems. Run through these first.
1–3: The easy wins
First, check the thermostat is set to cool and below room temperature — it happens more than you would think. Second, replace a dirty air filter, which is the number-one cause of weak airflow and frozen coils. Third, check your breaker; an AC that tripped a breaker will not cool.
4–5: Look outside and at the vents
Fourth, make sure the outdoor unit is running and clear of debris. Fifth, confirm all your supply vents are open and unblocked by furniture. A blocked system struggles everywhere.
When to call
If the system runs but blows warm, the coil is iced over, you hear hissing, or the breaker keeps tripping, it is time for a pro. Those point to refrigerant, electrical, or compressor issues that need a technician.
