Hurricane Season HVAC Prep: Protecting Your AC in North Central FL

North Central Florida does not escape storm season. A little preparation protects your HVAC system and helps you recover cooling quickly and safely once it passes.

Before the storm

Turn the system off at the thermostat and the breaker if flooding or a direct hit is likely — a unit that loses power mid-cycle can be damaged by the surge when power returns. Clear loose yard items that could become projectiles, and never try to strap a tarp over a running condenser. Surge protection on the system is cheap insurance against our lightning.

After the storm

Do not turn the AC back on if the outdoor unit was flooded or submerged — water in the electrical and refrigerant components can be dangerous and cause more damage. Look for debris, shifted units, and damaged lines first. If anything looks off, leave it off and call a professional.

Power surges are the hidden risk

The most common post-storm failure is not wind — it is the electrical surge when grid power flickers back. A whole-system surge protector and a quick post-storm inspection prevent the expensive failures we see every season.
